For
this lesson I will be using the
personal web set
up in the FrontPage Visual Tutorials. For easier access to the options in
the navigation view you can right click up in the menu section and click on
Navigation to have the Navigation Toolbar visible on your work area. You can
either place it in a fixed spot at the top with the other toolbars or you
can drag it into your work area and make it a floating toolbar.
The screenshot to the left is the toolbar itself
and the screenshot to the right is the options in the toolbar. The
dropdown box allows you to zoom in and zoom out of the Navigation
View. Your next choice is viewing your navigation in portrait or
landscape.
The screenshot above is the portrait view of the personal
web and the screenshot on the right is the landscape view of the personal
web. The next option is adding an existing page to the navigational
structure. Since the personal web was created with the FrontPage templates
there are no pages in the web that are not included with the navigational
structure. It is possible however to add an existing page from outside of
the existing web. Simply right click on the page you wish to add on to and
then click on the Add Existing Page icon in the toolbar. A window like the
screenshot below will appear.
You
can type the external url into the Address box in the window, or choose to
create a new document within the web if you wish. You can also make this
external link an email address. Once you have added the external link click
OK you are taken back to the Navigation View and your link is added as shown
in the screenshot on the right. The world icon signifies that it is an
external link.
Your
next option is Included in Navigation bars. By clicking on a page and then
clicking on the Included in Navigation bars you are either including or
excluding that page from the navigation bars you will be setting up when
your navigational structure is finished. If you exclude a page from the
structure it will show as grayed out instead of the yellow they show now. In
the screenshot on the left I have excluded the Favorites page from being in
the navigational bars so it appears grayed out.
The last icon in the menu is View Subtree Only. By
clicking on one of the pages within the tree then selecting this icon, all
pages that are within the same level or above the selected page in the tree
are hidden and the page itself and any pages below it are still visible. In
the screenshot on the right I have selected the Interests page and then
selected the View Subtree only.
Something
not included in the Navigation toolbar is delete. You can delete a page by
right clicking on the page that you want to delete and choosing Delete (as
shown in the screenshot on the left). Another window will open as shown in
the screenshot to the right. You can either remove the page only from the
navigational structure or you can deleted the page from the web itself.
Because the personal web was created by a template
provided by FrontPage the navigational structure was already set up. If you
are building a web from scratch, when you click on the View then Navigation
you are going to see only your index page in the navigation view. You can
add pages to the structure by the add existing page icon or you can drag and
drop your pages from the Folder List to where you want it placed within the
navigational structure.
Once you have the navigational structure
for your web set up you are ready to set up the Navigation Bar (unless you
have set up the Navigation bar using Shared Borders). Once again in the
personal web the navigation bar is already set up because it is a FrontPage
template. In actual fact there are two navigational bars set up on the pages
in the personal web. It has included a vertical bar and a horizontal bar
which both use the navigational structure to create the navigation bars.
To
add a Navigation bar to your web after your navigational structure has been
set up all you need to do is click on Insert on the Main menu then choose
Navigation and a window will pop up like the one on the right. Be sure that
Bar based on navigation structure is highlighted and click next.
If you click on the screenshot on the right you will be taken to the
next window that will open. From this screen you can choose the appearance
of your links, if you have created your web without a theme there is most
likely no style for your links, you can choose from the list provided which
borrow from an already set up theme provided by FrontPage. (Themes will be
discussed in another lesson.) Once you have picked the links you like click
on the next button for another window.
Again click on the screenshot on the right to see the
next window that will open. Now you are given a choice of horizontal or
vertical navigation bar. Highlight the one you want and click Finish.
Once you have clicked Finish a new
window will appear as shown on the right. The style tab holds the
different link styles so if you change your mind you can change them
from there. The General tab is where you will configure what links
will appear on the pages. You have 6 choices and the legend below
the choices will show you what each option links to. In addition to
that you can place links to the homepage and parent page by checking
them off. Once you have made your choice click OK and your new
navigation menu will appear on your page. To make changes you just
have to double click on the menu and the properties window will pop
up.
* Please note that in order to use the Navigation
Bar setup on your website FrontPage Extensions must be supported and turned
on.
