Lesson 20

Reports

To view the reports that FrontPage XP provides just click on View in the main menu and choose reports. This lesson will cover what is found under the Site Summary. You are provided with a great deal of information that is not easily provided if you did not use FrontPage. It can help you find errors such as broken links within your web, When you first click on Site Summary you will see a summary report as shown on the graphic here The list is shown on the right here.

All files is all the files that exist within your web, Ask Maggy Mae has 2143 files totaling 55,6965KB of space. That's a fair sized website and AMM is 2 1/2 years old now and a few of the tutorials I wrote way back when I first opened the ADD Support Group on MSN to help the membership with posting graphics and doing backgrounds. So the tutorials for AMM began long before AMM was even thought of.

Next you are given the total amount of pictures within your web and the space it uses. These two are just information for you to know, keeping track of the size of your web could be important to you if you have a small amount of space for your online website. But now we get into things that can really help us make the best of our website.

Unlinked files are files within your web that can not be reached through your homepage. Now because AMM has a graphics area for my graphics that I use on the forums and some I use when visiting MSN Groups. Because it brings a long list of unlinked files to the web itself I created a page in my web on the hard drive that is marked not to be published and on it is a link or graphic that belongs to AMM but does not directly link to the website, ie forum graphics. But sometimes when working we don't realize we've saved something to the web on the hard drive and the unlinked files list will help determine files that really shouldn't be there.

Linked files should actually match your all files.

Next is your list of slow pages. AMM has many slow pages due to the graphics intense tutorials, but in general you should be trying to make fast loading pages as a slow page will not attract your viewers attention so they will want to come back.

Older files list will show you all the files that have not been modified in more than 72 days. Many of the files in there can be graphics, it's not likely that graphics are going to be changed often. But this is handy for someone who has a site that has content that should change often and you can open this list and see if there is something in it that you feel should be updated.

Recently Added files is the list of files that you have added to the web within the last 30 days.

You are then given the total amount of Hyperlinks that exist within your web. This includes hyperlinks both within and outside of your website. You are also given a list of unverified Hyperlinks a list of Broken Hyperlinks and a list of External Hyperlinks and list of Internal Hyperlinks. If you click on any one of the Hyperlinks choices you will be asked if you want your links verified. This tool is very handy especially if you have a large site like this. It will go through the list of every hyperlink inside your web and verify that each one works. People hate websites with broken hyperlinks so with FrontPage giving you this option to test all of your hyperlinks is a good thing. But if I was to run that option right now on this web I would be told that 7 hyperlinks are actually broken. When I test the links they are not broken. The report I get tells me that both the msn.com links are broken and all grc links are broken, when I test all 7 links they do work, so they must be slower loading pages than what FrontPage is allowing. Here is a screenshot of the broken links reported on AMM.

Next is the Component errors, if you check my site summary report screenshot you will see that in this web there are 2 component errors. These errors exist in one of the sample webs I created and as you can see by the report below, they pertain to items that must be published to a web before they are functional. Once you have uploaded these components I would suggest testing them to be sure they are in working order.

Name Title Errors Type In Folder
index.htm Welcome to my Web site This page contains a FrontPage Hit Counter component that will not function properly until you publish your FrontPage web to a server. htm visuals/Frontpage/myweb2
feedback.htm Feedback This page contains a FrontPage Save Results component that will not function properly until you publish your FrontPage web to a server. htm visuals/Frontpage/myweb2

Next is Uncompleted tasks and this is handy for writing notes to yourself about what you plan to add to your web, or if more than one person is assigned to the web then tasks for each individual can be created. More on this in Lesson 21.

The final report is Unused themes, which you will see if you have chosen a theme for your web and later changed it or decided not to use it. The themes you have previously chosen are still lingering in the web and you can remove them by clicking on the link provided in the Report Summary for Unused themes.

Reporting Toolbar

A hidden toolbar by default that can be customized. To the right is the list of commands for this toolbar. To show this toolbar right click up in the toolbar area and check Reporting by clicking on it. You can then move it anywhere within the toolbar area to make it convenient to access or you can drag it within your editing area to make it a floating toolbar.

FrontPage offers even reports that are not listed here, to view them just click on View in the main menu and choose reports and choose any one in the list.
