Lesson 10

Using a Background with a Left Border

If you don't already have a background with a left border then you will have to make one or find one on the internet that is free for use. To make a background with a left border follow the instructions in this lesson. Once this is finished follow the instructions below.

  1. Create a new blank page

  2. Right click on the page and choose Page Properties

  3. Click on the Background tab

  4. Check background picture

  5. Click on the Browse button and find the graphic you wish to use for your background

  6. Click on the graphic to select it then click on the Open button

  7. Click on the Margins tab

  8. Check  Specify Top Margin and enter 20 then check.Specify Left Margin and enter 0 then click the OK button.

  9. Now you will need the width of border graphic, if you created the border yourself you can get this information by opening the original graphic in PSP and go to the File menu and choose Image then Image Information. The width is the first number in the dimensions. For my graphic it is 144, so I will make my margin slightly bigger at 150. If you have a ready made bordered graphic then you can open it in PSP and crop it to the border then find it's dimensions under Image Information.

  10. Go to the File menu and click Table then Insert then table.

  11. You want two columns and one row, width 100%, 0 on the borders then click OK

  12. You now want to resize the left column to fit the border of your graphic, to do this right click in that cell and choose cell properties.

  13. Once that window is open you will see Specify Width, check it and enter the width or slightly larger than your original graphic and click OK (make sure you have check pixels)

  14. This usually alters the rest of your information on width of your table so you then want to right click anywhere inside the table and choose Table Properties and check Specify Width and make it 100 then make sure you have in percent checked)

  15. Now right click in the right column and choose cell properties and uncheck Specify Width and click OK

  16. You are now ready to add your text and graphics to your page. You will enter all graphics and text into the right column of your table. Once you have saved your page and uploaded to the internet you should have a left bordered background with all text and graphics to the right of the page.
